The remit of microbiology focuses on detecting aetiologically relevant microorganisms using cultural, immunological, biochemical and molecular-biological technices. This involves use of technological methods ranging from cultivation and isolation on growth media through detection of pathogen antigens using ELISA to MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and established PCR techniques with subsequent sequencing. As a requirement for the resistance testing the microbes are cultivated and isolated in pure culture in order to provide indications of the efficacy of anti-infectives and thus be able to give therapy recommendations.

Further remits of our Medical Microbiology include diagnosis of fungal infections or aerobic and anaerobic bacteria from varying test materials, resistance testing or blood culture, urine and tuberculosis diagnostics.
